Asbestos Lung Cancer Hope for a vaccine against “the cancer from asbestos A Dutch team would progress today in the development of a therapeutic vaccine against pleural mesothelioma, a tumor that affects primarily the victims of asbestos.
Initial tests seem to show a good tolerance of the vaccine. This is encouraging news in the fight against a disease whose prognosis is now darker.

The candidate vaccine has been developed from dendritic cells – immune system cells – patients placed in contact with tumor antigens. The specific immune response that has resulted has effectively fight against the disease: 10 patients on whom the candidate vaccine was tested, three have seen their cancer regress. (more…)

Lung Cancer and Medical Malpractice

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Lung CancerLung cancer is the deadliest type of cancer worldwide. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, although non-smokers can suffer from lung cancer (and in fact do) because of other sources such as exposure to asbestos or radon gas. Lung cancer can also occur by the spread of cancer (metastasis) from other parts of the body.
Misdiagnosis

As with any cancer, early treatment is essential. Lung cancer is not only the most deadly type of cancer, but is also one of the most wrongly diagnosed. Misdiagnosis can lead to late detection, which allows the disease to continue to grow and make it more difficult treatment. In some cases, the doctor diagnosed the symptoms of lung cancer as something different, for example tuberculosis or bronchitis. In some cases, misdiagnosis has led to the incorrect removal of a lung. Health Risks

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Health Risks If you had a single contact with asbestos, there is little health risk. But if you are in frequent contact with asbestos increases the risk significantly, regardless of the variety of asbestos to which you are exposed.

The risk of passing air respirable fibers increases during the handling of asbestos-containing materials, eg in demolition work, cutting, drilling, breakage or when materials are very aged. That is why this sector of the population is potentially exposed as well, in general, totally unaware of its presence and its dangers. (more…)

Cause of Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Cause of Lung Cancer and MesotheliomaExposure to asbestos is another well-known cause of lung cancer and mesothelioma - cancer of the pleura lining the lungs. Asbestos is widely used in construction and everyday products in the late 1800s through the 1960s. Asbestos separates into fine silica fibers that become trapped in lung tissue.

Mesothelioma is closely linked to asbestos exposure. There were reported cases of mesothelioma in people who are not exposed to asbestos either at work or through their environment. Non-smokers who are exposed to asbestos have a five times greater risk of lung cancer developed than non-smokers are not affected.

Smoking increases the risk dramatically – a smoker is exposed to asbestos have a risk of lung cancer developed a 50-90 times greater than non-smokers.

What is the difference between mesothelioma and lung cancer?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

mesothelioma

The easiest way to understand the difference between lung cancer and mesothelioma is that lung cancer is in the lung tissue, while pleural mesothelioma occurs in the layer of tissue lining the outside of the lung.

Smoking is considered the primary cause of lung cancer, and asbestos as the primary cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos can also cause lung cancer. Smoking does not cause mesothelioma. People who have been exposed to asbestos and who also smoke have up to 90 times more likely to be affected with lung cancer than those who do not smoke.
